Buried Secrets

Roles

Before and after missions, the players take on the roles of the crew’s command staff. These characters stay at headquarters, supporting the agents by making sure they have the right intel, people, and equipment. The agents can be the command staff - they don’t have to be distinct characters - but the game runs smoother if your command staff don’t end up dead or missing in action.

This accomplishes two goals. It helps the game run smoothly by dividing up crew responsibilities between the players, letting the GM focus on managing the conspiracy and generation of missions. Clearly defined roles also ensures that decision-making is spread across the group, allowing quieter or less assertive players to participate more equitably in shaping the destiny of the crew.

The game runs a little smoother if everyone plays the same role each time, but this isn’t required. If you want to reorganize once in a while (or even on a regular basis) and pick a different role, feel free!

Core Roles

The three core roles are required; if you only have two or three players, they will need to make sure to take on these roles.

The Director has responsibility for the overall crew. They pick the missions and track INTEL, heat and threat between missions.

Personnel is responsible for the selection, training, and health of the crew. They decide which agents go on a mission, track support personnel, and make sure everyone gets the xp that they have earned.

The Quartermaster is responsible for managing the capabilities of the crew and their headquarters. They supply assets for a mission and manage crew upgrades.

Support Roles

The next two roles help support larger groups. Things are a little tougher without them, but you’ll manage.

Counter-intel is responsible for protecting the crew from the conspiracy. They manage counter-agents whose activities boost the crew effectiveness.

The Analyst is responsible for keeping track of the clues and identifying people, places, and things of interest. They also write the after-action report.
