Buried Secrets

Soldier Playbook

A member of the US air force in uniform.

Dangerous and intimidating fighter

print version

The military (or ex-military) officer with intelligence training is never going to be satisfied with a quiet civilian job. The world only survives because rough individuals stand ready to do violent justice in the dark.

This playbook works just as well for vigilantes or rough-and-tumble private investigators caught up in whatever grand conspiracy awaits.

If your first instinct when confronted is to reach for a weapon or throw a punch, this is probably the playbook for you.

When you play an soldier, you gain xp when you address a challenge with violence or intimidation. The conspiracy won’t hold back when it feels threatened - neither should you. Never leave a crewmate behind, keep your crew alive, and always be the one to flip the table.

Starting builds

If you want some guidance when you assign your four starting action dots and special ability, use one of these templates.

H.M. Murdock. Attune +1, Finesse +1, Tinker +2. Battleborn. This template is inspired by the veteran helicopter pilot of the A-Team.

Roberta “Bobbie” Draper. Command +1, Survey +2, Tinker +1. Bodyguard. This template is inspired by the Martian marine of The Expanse.

Jessica Jones. Prowl +1, Hunt +1, Study +1, Wreck +1. Savage. This template is inspired by the private investigator and ex-superhero Jessica Jones.

Jason Bourne. Hunt +2, Consort +1, Survey +1. Not to be trifled with. This template is inspired by the elite CIA assassin of The Bourne Identity.

Soldier abilities

Battleborn — You may expend your special armor to reduce harm from an attack in combat or to push yourself during a fight.

Bodyguard — When you protect a teammate, take +1d to your resistance roll. When you gather info to anticipate possible threats in the current situation, you get +1 effect.

Leader — When you Command a cohort in combat, they continue to fight when they would otherwise break (they’re not taken out when they suffer level 3 harm). They gain +1 effect and 1 armor.

Mule — Your load limits are higher. Light: 5. Normal: 7. Heavy: 8.

Not to be trifled with — You can push yourself to do one of the following: perform a feat of physical force that verges on the superhuman—engage a small gang on equal footing in close combat.

Savage — When you unleash physical violence, it’s especially frightening. When you Command a frightened target, take +1d.

Vigourous — You recover from harm faster. Permanently fill in one of your healing clock segments. Take +1d to healing treatment rolls.

Soldier items

In addition to the standard gear you have access to the following items:

Rapid fire weapon —A pair of finely crafted heavy pistols. A machine pistol. A light machine gun. A mechanical crossbow. Was this loadout made by Ares, Benelli, Colt, Ruger, Steyr or some other gun manufacturer? Does it have any interesting designs or light schemes? [1 load]

Speciality ammo — A small amount of armor-piercing bullets, tracer rounds, explosive shells, toxin rounds, or stun rounds. Feel free to choose which ammunition type you brought with you when you mark this item. [1 load]

Foam explosive — Just spray a little of this stuff along a door frame, into a car trunk lock, or whatever you’d like to open. It looks like shaving cream and goes off like low-powered plastic explosive (Class 1) when detonated with a blasting cap. [1 load]

Night vision optics — Typical models enhance ambient light or see in false-color infrared (older models use built-in IR illuminators). Goggles, binoculars, or gun scopes are all decent choices. [0 load]
